For First 10 Months Of 2018, Raw Material Imports Down, Finished Goods Imports Up, Exports Up

U.S. government trade figures for the first 10 months of 2018 indicated raw material imports were down in all four categories outlined: hog bristles, broom and mop handles, brush backs and metal handles, compared to the first 10 months of 2017. For October 2018, all four categories also reported decreases, compared to October 2017.

Import totals for the first 10 months of 2018 were up in five finished goods categories outlined: toothbrushes, hairbrushes, paint rollers, paintbrushes and upright brooms, compared to the first 10 months of 2017. In October 2018, five categories outlined also recorded increases: hairbrushes, shaving brushes, paint rollers, paintbrushes and upright brooms, compared to October 2017.


– RAW MATERIAL IMPORTS –


Hog Bristle

The United States imported 16,575 kilograms of hog bristle in October 2018,
down 9 percent from 18,146 kilograms imported in October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 189,340 kilograms of hog bristle were imported, down 43 percent from 332,557 kilograms imported during the first 10 months of 2017.

China sent 187,281 kilograms of hog bristle to the United States during the first
10 months of 2018.

The average price per kilogram for October 2018 was $40.16, down 18 percent from the average price per kilogram for October 2017 of $48.70. The average price per kilogram for the first 10 months of 2018 was $36.20, up 70 percent from the average price per kilogram of $21.24 for the first 10 months of 2017.

Broom And Mop Handles

The import total of broom and mop handles during October 2018 was 1.9 million, down 5 percent from 2 million for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 15.4 million broom and mop handles were imported, down 4 percent from 16.1 million for the first 10 months of 2017.

During the first 10 months of 2018, the United States received 7.1 million broom and mop handles from Honduras, 4.7 million from Brazil and 2.6 million from China.

The average price per handle for October 2018 was 65 cents, down 27 percent from 89 cents for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was 71 cents, down 12 percent from 81 cents for the first 10 months of 2017.

Brush Backs

October 2018 imports of brush backs totaled 210,125, down 32 percent
from 310,041 for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 4.3 million brush backs were imported, down 2 percent from 4.4 million for the first 10
months of 2017.

Sri Lanka shipped 2 million brush backs to the United States during the first 10 months of 2018, while Canada sent 1.5 million.

The average price per brush back was 57 cents during October 2018, down 14 percent from 66 cents for October 2017. For the first 10 months of 2018, the average price per brush back was 50 cents, down 4 percent from 52 cents for the first 10 months of 2017.

Metal Handles

The import total of metal handles during October 2018 was 1.1 million, down 42 percent from 1.9 million for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 16.8 million metal handles were imported, down 11 percent from 18.9 million for the first 10 months of 2017.

During the first 10 months of 2018, Italy exported 7.1 million metal handles to the United States, while China sent 5.3 million and Spain shipped 3.3 million.

The average price per handle for October 2018 was $1.56, up 44 percent from $1.08 for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was $1, up 6 percent from 94 cents for the first 10 months of 2017.


– FINISHED GOODS IMPORTS –


Brooms Of Broom Corn Valued At More Than 96 Cents

The United States imported 496,972 brooms of broom corn valued at more than
96 cents per broom during October 2018, down 23 percent from 649,607 for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 5.4 million brooms of broom
corn were imported, down 8 percent from 5.9 million for the first 10 months of 2017.

Mexico sent nearly all of the brooms to the United States during the first 10
months of 2018.

The average price per broom for October 2018 was $2.48, up 8 percent from $2.29 for October 2017. The average price per broom for the first 10 months of 2018 was $2.41, up 2 percent from $2.37 for the first 10 months of 2017.

 

Brooms & Brushes Of Vegetable Material

The import total of brooms and brushes of vegetable material during October 2018 was 111,542, down 46 percent from 206,415 brooms and brushes imported during October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 2.2 million brooms and brushes were imported, down 4 percent from 2.3 million for the first 10 months of 2017.

Sri Lanka exported 1.3 million brooms and brushes to the United States during the first 10 months of 2018.

The average price per unit for October 2018 was $1.70, up 55 percent from $1.10 for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was $1.16, down 22 percent from $1.48 for the first 10 months of 2017.

Toothbrushes

The United States imported 93.7 million toothbrushes in October 2018, down 1 percent from 94.8 million imported in October 2017. During the first 10 months
of 2018, 921.6 million toothbrushes were imported, up 1 percent from 914.8 million for the first 10 months of 2017.

China sent 731.3 million toothbrushes to the United States during the first 10 months of 2018.

The average price per toothbrush for October 2018 was 23 cents, up 1 cent from the average price for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was 24 cents, up 9 percent from 22 cents for the first 10 months of 2017.

 

Hairbrushes

October 2018 imports of hairbrushes totaled 6.5 million, up 44 percent from 4.5 million for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 44 million hairbrushes were imported, up 4 percent from 42.4 million for the first 10 months of 2017.

China sent 43.9 million hairbrushes to the United States during the first 10
months of 2018.

The average price per hairbrush was 27 cents during October 2018, up 1 cent from the average price for October 2017. For the first 10 months of 2018, the average price per hairbrush was 25 cents, also up 1 cent from the average price for the first 10 months of 2017.

Shaving Brushes

The United States imported 5.3 million shaving brushes in October 2018, up 13 percent from 4.7 million imported in October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 47 million shaving brushes were imported, down 3 percent from 48.3 million imported during the first 10 months of 2017.

China sent 32.6 million shaving brushes to the United States during the first 10 months of 2018, while South Korea shipped 8.7 million.

The average price per shaving brush for October 2018 was 17 cents, up 13 percent from 15 cents for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was 14 cents, the same as for the first 10 months of 2017.

 

Paint Rollers

The import total of paint rollers during October 2018 was 9 million, up 67 percent from 5.4 million for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 77.3 million paint rollers were imported, up 31 percent from 58.9 million during the first 10 months of 2017.

China sent 62.6 million paint rollers to the United States during the first 10
months of 2018.

The average price per paint roller for October 2018 was 42 cents, down 13 percent from 48 cents for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was 41 cents, down 11 percent from 46 cents for the first 10 months of 2017.

Paintbrushes

U.S. companies imported 24.9 million paintbrushes during October 2018, up
16 percent from 21.4 million for October 2017. Paintbrush imports for the first
10 months of 2018 were 261.5 million, up 19 percent from 220.3 million for the
first 10 months of 2017.

China shipped 236 million paintbrushes to the United States during the first 10 months of 2018.

The average price per paintbrush for October 2018 was 32 cents, up 28 percent from 25 cents for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was 29 cents, the same as for the first 10 months of 2017.

Upright Brooms

The total import of upright brooms for October 2018 was 1.7 million, up 13 percent from 1.5 million for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 15 million upright brooms were imported, up 4 percent from 14.4 million for the first 10 months of 2017.

China sent 13.3 million upright brooms to the United States during the first 10 months of 2018.

The average price per broom for October 2018 was $1.46, up 32 percent from $1.11 for October 2017. The average price per broom for the first 10 months of 2018 was $1.38, up 12 percent from $1.23 for the first 10 months of 2017.


– EXPORTS –


Export totals for the first 10 months of 2018 were up in four categories outlined: toothbrushes, shaving brushes, artist brushes, and paintbrushes, compared to the first 10 months of 2017.

In October 2018, three categories reported increases, compared to October 2017: brooms and brushes of vegetable materials, toothbrushes and paintbrushes.


Brooms & Brushes Of Vegetable Materials

The United States exported 7,600 dozen brooms and brushes of vegetable materials during October 2018, up 47 percent from the October 2017 total of 5,
187 dozen. Exports of brooms and brushes of vegetable materials during the
first 10 months of 2018 were 74,411 dozen, down 3 percent from 76,825 dozen
for the first 10 months of 2017.

The United States sent 41,885 dozen brooms and brushes to Canada, during the first 10 months of 2018.

The average price per dozen brooms and brushes was $43.13 in October 2018, down 5 percent from $45.27 for October 2017. The average price per dozen brooms and brushes for the first 10 months of 2018 was $36.65, up less than
1 percent from $36.55 for the first 10 months of 2017.

 

Toothbrushes

During October 2018, the United States exported 13 million toothbrushes, up 29 percent from 10.1 million for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 136.1 million toothbrushes were exported, up 21 percent from 112.9 million exported during the first 10 months of 2017.

The United States exported 36 million toothbrushes to Canada, and 24.3 million
to Germany, during the first 10 months of 2018.

The average price per toothbrush for October 2018 was 55 cents, down 1 cent from the average price for October 2017. The average price per toothbrush for the first 10 months of 2018 was 53 cents, down 5 percent from the average price for the first 10 months of 2017 of 56 cents.


Shaving Brushes

The United States exported 834,647 shaving brushes during October 2018, down 64 percent from 2.3 million for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 14.9 million shaving brushes were exported, up 1 percent from 14.7 million for
the first 10 months of 2017.

During the first 10 months of 2018, the United States exported 5.9 million shaving brushes to Brazil, and 2.8 million to both Mexico and Canada.

The average price per shaving brush for October 2018 was $2.11, up 137
percent from 89 cents for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was $1.25, up 18 percent from the average price for the first 10 months
of 2017 of $1.06.

Artist Brushes

October 2018 exports of artist brushes totaled 806,783, down 7 percent
from 866,611 for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 8.8 million
artist brushes were exported, up 7 percent from 8.2 million for the first 10
months of 2017.

Canada received 6.1 million artist brushes from the United States during the first
10 months of 2018.

The average price per artist brush was $3.36 during October 2018, down 21 percent from the average price for October 2017 of $4.25. For the first 10 months of 2018, the average price per artist brush was $3.65, down 4 percent from $3.82 for the first 10 months of 2017.

Paintbrushes

The export total of paintbrushes during October 2018 was 161,086, up 29 percent from 124,610 for October 2017. During the first 10 months of 2018, 2 million paintbrushes were exported, up 5 percent from 1.9 million for the first 10 months
of 2017.

Canada imported 1.1 million paintbrushes from the United States during the first
10 months of 2018, while the United Kingdom received 361,838.

The average price per paintbrush for October 2018 was $8.57, down 15 percent from $10.09 for October 2017. The average price for the first 10 months of 2018 was $6.79, down 3 percent from $7 for the first 10 months of 2017.

The grand opening of Perlon’s new location in Haining City, Zhejang Province, China,
was celebrated November 29.

Approximately 140 invited guests attended the opening ceremony for the newly constructed site in the urban development zone. Special events included a traditional cultural program, and an exhibition and gala dinner in the nearby Langham Place hotel.
